Welcome to the York Area Group of the NYMR
Our aim is to support the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) and in particular but not exclusively, the P-way dept. We are a charity in our own right (Charity number 1073653).
We are mainly comprised of NYMR members who mainly live in the York area but not exclusively. For those who just want to attend the meetings, these are open to the general public but if you do join the group then a discount on admission is available. To become a York Area Group Member it only costs £2 per year, for which you not only support the Group’s efforts but you will save £1 per attendance at our monthly meetings and presentations (with licensed bar) !
Please contact the group secretary for details via the contact page. What better way to view the working Steam trains, Diesel trains, rolling stock and railway in the scenic Yorkshire Moors than from the trackside while helping and working as a volunteer for the NYMR and York Area Group!

Our prime source of income for supporting the NYMR is through recycling of paper and aluminium products, in which we have been invoved in for over 30 years!
The York Area Group has shifted a few thousand tonnes of material in this time to help towards funding for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Generally recycling is carried out on Wednesdays, if you would like to help or can contribute materials for recycling then please contact the group secretary via the contacts page and arrangements can be made for collection or a drop-off location.
As a result of the hard work done by various people on the NYMR and in particular by one of our members Nick Bielby for the work carried out at Pickering Station and the construction of the Train of Thought project at the station. The NYMR has been awarded a special “National Railway Heritage Award”
The group can also claim some credit in the part funding of some of the project, in particular the re erection of the station canopy from Church Fenton station in the picnic area.
The NYMR is one of the longest preserved railway lines in the UK with 18 miles of track running through the North Yorkshire Moors with Steam and Diesel trains with historical rolling stock. The York Area Group website of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway welcomes you to use the menu above to look around this site and see articles and pictures of the work carried out on the track and the Pway rolling stock by the York Area Group for the NYMR and Pway department.

Work carried out by the York Area Group and the P-Way department on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is very varied and diverse, which includes fundraising, on-site track maintenance repairs and renewal, yard track assembly/dismantling, wagon and rolling stock repairs painting and overhaul, plant repairs servicing and operation, lineside repairs decoration fencing and vegetation control. Therefore any skill can be put to good use while also learning new skills. If you want to get involved or can help in any way, then please contact the group secretary of the York Area Group via the contact page for details. Or call in to one of the meetings in New Earswick which are open to the public and normally have a talk/presentation on various rail subjects.
